We dropped our bags and went out in search of pizza, taking a risk walking up to Lucali. The rainy weather would scare off the crowds, right? There was a two-hour-plus wait at 8pm, and it reminded me of the recent SNL sketch Big Dumb Line. Plan B: Frankie Spuntino’s spin-off slice shop in Carroll Gardens. We ordered their classic cheese, Partanna with red onion, mozzarella, pecorino, Romano, Calabrian chili, orange blossom honey and oregano and their clam pizza with mozz, parm, bread crumbs and a squeeze of lemon. I loved the crust’s leopard-spot char and light hand with the toppings. It was the perfect stand-up slice to kick off our trip. Check out their IG @fandfpizzeria.
The next day, I attended
’s annual Jubilee gathering for women in food. I always leave their events with a jolt of inspiration and at least one new business contact. I met the chef-owners behind one of my neighborhood restaurants in Oakland, Daytrip. They’re reopening under a new casual concept in the coming weeks. I can’t wait to try their rotisserie chicken, salads and caesar salad fries (!). Gloria Steinem was the keynote speaker and offered encouragement to continue the work of building community in real life. Gloria and I also share a love for the British medical drama Call the Midwife.
